James Woodward & Sons 16 Bore Sidelock Ejector – “The Automatic” - No. 1 of a Pair – Cased with Accessories
Description: *** SOLD PENDING FUNDS *** Rare and handsome James Woodward & Sons 16 bore sidelock ejector number 5151 made in 1897. Not many 16 bores were made by Woodwards. Recently refurbished and in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. Vibrant case colors and rich, deep bluing. Double triggers, automatic ejectors and auto safety. Tight on face. Has all the signature Woodward features: arcaded fences, T-shaped safety, bulbous cocking indicator and disc set strikers. Straight hand stock and splinter forearm of nicely figured English walnut. Comes with a period compact leather case with makers label and accessories including snap caps, brass oil bottle, mahogany cleaning rod and cleaning attachments. Weighs 6lb 3oz. The 28” nitro steel barrels have London Nitro Proofs and are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid concave style rib with the number “1” inlaid in gold near the breech end. The bores are shiny and bright and the bluing is rich and dark. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, Gamebore and ARMUSA are importing 2-1/2" low pressure shotshells into the US so ammunition is available from them as well as from RST Shotshells. The right barrel is bored 0.664 with a constriction of 0.003 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.029. The left barrel is also bored 0.664 and has a constriction of 0.007 for Improved Cylinder. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. Ideal choking for the upland gunner. The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut with original owner’s initials “WFD” engraved on the gold initial plate. Recently refinished in a satin finish and the checkering refreshed. The stock has a short 5/8” figured wood extension that matches the stock with a 3/4” leather covered pad. Stock dimensions are 15-1/8” by 1-1/2” by 2”. Cast off approximately 1/8” for the righthand shot. There is a reason that the 16 bore is known as the “Queen of the Uplands”. With its light weight it is easy to carry for a day afield and ballistically it is a very lethal, hard-hitting load. Very few 16 bores were made by Woodwards so they are quite rare. This is your chance to own a great handling upland double from one of the top London gunmakers. Perfect for grouse, quail, woodcock and other upland gamebirds. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
