There are a lot of upgraded Model 12 Trap guns on the market and most of them are so poorly done it is hard to consider them. You see shiny, hot blued barrels and receivers, clumsy looking stocks, most without checkering, just cobbled guns really. There are just as many that are just “OK” as well. The Model 12 Trap gun is a world-renowned shooting machine for crushing clays and the PRE-1964 guns are coveted by shooters and collectors alike. This beautiful Model 12, sn1970758 built in 1964, is a fine example of using the best vintage American trap gun ever made and the talents of a true MASTER GUNMAKER to create a true masterpiece of the gunmaker’s art. This Model 12 has been upgraded with full coverage, deep-relief foliate style engraving with shaded background, tasteful and generous use of gold wire inlays, game scene vignettes with heavy, raised-gold inlays with intricate and anatomically correct detail (most gold inlays are flat and lifeless), showing a large, heavy pointing setter and two pheasants on the left side and 3 ducks over a marsh on the right side, plus an intricate gold crown on the tip of the magazine tube. The engraving and gold wire extend to the breech end of the barrel and the magazine tube carrier bracket as well. I get to handle and sell guns that run into the high 5 figures quite regularly as part of my job (lucky me, right?) and the workmanship on this gun is amongst the best. There is no signature on the work, so we have no solid information on the engraver. If anybody thinks they know who did the work I would love to know. The exhibition grade walnut buttstock and forend are custom stocks signed by Art King under the Pachmayr pad. The shaping, checkering, and stock finish is superb. This is NOT an amateur job. The gun is flawless with no excuses whatsoever. Just a gorgeous Model 12 Trap with full choke barrel and Monte Carlo stock with awesome stock dimensions for smoking clay targets from the line. The cost of the engraving and wood is more than we are asking for the entire gun. If you are a shooter or merely a collector of fine gun art, this is an amazing Winchester Trap gun.
