Winchester Model 1912 Trap 12ga Pump Shotgun Mfg. 1960
Description: The Model 12 is one of the all-time classic shotguns, along with the Winchester Model 1897, Remington Models 31 and 870, and the Ithaca Model 37. The Model 1912 was designed in-house by T.C. Johnson for Winchester. Mr. Johnson used John Browning’s famous M1897 shotgun as a starting point, most noticeably switching the gun from using an external hammer to an internal one. Like its predecessor, the M1912 used, for the time, a rather unique take down system wherein both the barrel and the magazine tube were attached to the same forward assembly and attached to the receiver by a rotating thread system. To remove the barrel, a pin at the end of the magazine tube was pushed to one side, and then the tube was rotated until the its threads no longer interlocked with the receiver threads, at which point, the magazine tube was pulled forward. With the forearm pulled all the way to the forward position, the entire assembly was rotated until the barrel threads no longer interlocked with a second set of receiver threads. The entire assembly could then be removed. This made it possible for a hunter or other sport shooter to switch the Model 12 to another barrel in a relatively short period of time (less than a minute). There are signs of wear in different locations as can be seen in the photos above. This is not surprising when one considers the age of this particular shotgun. With a serial number of 1,907,356 this gun was manufactured in 1960 making it a fairly late example of one of the finest shotgun designs ever produced. At this point (2022), it is 62 years old. The barrel is 30 inches long, which is standard for a Trap Shotgun. Naturally, it has a fixed full choke. Lock-up is still very tight and mechanically the shotgun is in good condition. The bore is spotless and looks as if it left the factory yesterday. The barrel has a few nicks or light scratches in the finish on the barrel. There are also friction streaks in the barrel’s finish from cycling the action. The pistol grip area of the stock exhibits some finish wear – it is essentially the most outer layer of the gloss the has flaked away. There is some minor bluing loss on the bottom of the trigger guard. The bottom of the follower exhibits the most minute amount of micro-pitting. Otherwise, the Model 12 is in excellent shape.
