RARE Antique Winchester Model 1893 RIOT Shotgun
Description: RARE Antique Winchester Model 1893 RIOT Shotgun With Cody Letter Confirming Configuration & Date! Here we present a rare, original antique Winchester Model 1893 “Riot” Pump Action Shotgun, shipped out of the Winchester warehouse on June 11, 1894 as order #15029 per the accompanying Cody Letter that also contains confirmation of the original barrel length. Only 34,050 were produced, of which it is estimated that only 644 were made in this riot barrel length configuration. The Model 1893 was Winchester’s very first pump action (aka slide action) shotgun design and considered the first successful pump action shotgun. The prolific and legendary gun designer, John Moses Browning, was responsible. In a case of bad luck, this gun was caught between two different technological eras, the end of the black powder age and the start of the new smokeless powder era. Since it was designed to be used with 12-gauge shells loaded with black powder, it worried Winchester by the late 1890s as identical smokeless 12-gauge shells began to take over the market. Fearing injuries and lawsuits from smokeless shells being used in a black powder gun, Winchester began one of the earliest product recalls probably in American history by placing ads in various publications. At this time, Winchester had made over 30,000 Model 93s. The ads encouraged owners of the Winchester Model 1893 to send their guns back to Winchester in exchange for a brand-new Model 1897. Every Model 1893 that was returned was destroyed. Needless to say, this is a highly desirable and rare shotgun. Another neat feature of this shotgun is the exposed hammer which was kept on the successor Model 1897. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. MODEL 1893. PAT. NOV.25.1890” and “12” The left side of the frame is marked “WINCHESTER MODEL 1893”. The left side of the frame is hand-inscribed “USA 831” a possible marking from military or law enforcement use. The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish is about 30% with much of it turning a solid plum color. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid with some honest handling marks. The bore is shiny and smooth, just how you want it. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This shotgun has just about everything you want in a firearm: it’s a Winchester, it’s the first successful pump action shotgun, the design work of John Moses Browning, it’s riot length, very rare, and it comes with a Cody Letter! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 20 inches. Caliber: 12 Gauge Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $3450 #6165 SOLD Antique: Yes |
