Westley Richards Bar-in-Wood 12 Bore Hammergun with 30” Highly Figured Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: Shootable, rare, and collectible Westley Richards 12 bore bar-in-wood hammergun. Westley Richards no. 11960 was made in 1870. It has its original 29-3/4” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels. And its original highly figured French walnut stock and forearm. Double triggers, extractors, and rebounding hammers. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 12oz. The 29-3/4” nitro Damascus barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and were reproofed for 1-1/8oz loads. The barrels have recently been refinished to a nice brown color and show the figure off very well. The barrels are topped by a raised solid crosshatched gamestyle rib which is inscribed “Westley Richards 170 New Bond St. London”. The right barrel is bored 0.737 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. The left barrel is bored 0.735 and also has a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. These barrels were made in the era before choking the bores became widespread. You can tighten up the chokes by using ammunition with high antimony hard shot as needed. The wood bar stock and splinter forearm with horn forearm tip are made of highly figured French walnut and are in overall sturdy condition. Both have numerous scratches and other handling marks but no serious cracks. Checkering needs refreshing. There is a shallow surface crack on the left side of the buttstock and another shallow surface crack on the forearm. There is a historic repair to the right horn where it meets the action bar(see photo). These can be easily and inexpensively repaired. What is needed is a professional stock refinishing to get rid of the handling marks and bring out the beautiful figure. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” to a thin metal plate by 1-3/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the right hand shot. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
