RARE Antique WESTLEY RICHARDS 1864 Patent “BAR-IN-WOOD” SxS Hammer Shotgun
ENGRAVED 16 Gauge DOUBLE BARREL Snap Action Toplever
Description: RARE Antique WESTLEY RICHARDS 1864 Patent “BAR-IN-WOOD” SxS Hammer Shotgun ENGRAVED 16 Gauge DOUBLE BARREL Snap Action Toplever Here we present an antique Westley Richards 16 Bore 1864 Patent Double Barrel Snap Action Toplever Bar-In-Wood Hammer Shotgun, made in Birmingham, England, in 1865. William Westley Richards established his prestigious company in 1812, at 22 years of age, at 82 High Street in Birmingham. His high-end London shop was established in 1815 at 170 New Bond Street. William’s son, Westley Richards, joined his father in business at the age of 26 and continued to grow the business with his own ideas and patents. It was he who was responsible for the design of the infamous “Monkey Tail” Carbine in 1858. As mentioned above, this beautiful shotgun was manufactured in 1865 incorporating Westley Richards patent No. 2623 of October 22, 1864, and converted from pinfire during its early working life. This example has browned Damascus barrels with a concave rib signed “WESTLEY RICHARDS. 170. NEW BOND ST. LONDON” and engraved “PATENT” towards the scroll engraved doll’s head extension. It has a single bite action with a Toplever engraved “WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT” and non-rebounding sidelocks each signed “WESTLEY RICHARDS”. The pinfire style hammer strikes the firing pin from the top of the fence and the firing pin striker itself is of triangular form as noted in other early centerfire shotguns. The conversion from pinfire was apparently achieved by adding a section to the front of the standing breech to incorporate the firing pins. The engraving on the shotgun is a classic British border and scroll engraving. It has a figured 14” walnut straight hand stock with a characteristic crab-joint knuckle and panels of multipoint checkering to the grip, forearm, horn heel plate, and dark horn forming tip. There are Birmingham black powder proof marks and black powder reproof marks. There is also a recommended load stamped into the bottom which is 6.5 grams of black powder and 32 of shot. This nice example is formerly of the Malcolm King collection. The overall condition is very good. Robust action. Mirror bright bores, both remain smooth. This example showcases a solid stock in very good shape, has a smooth finish, and a nicely checkered wrist. The horn accent at the rear of the forearm has been reattached. The forearm wedge is a bit undersized, so it is prone to slide. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 27-3/4 inches. Bore: 16 Gauge Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2550 #217184 SOLD Antique: Yes |
