SKB 280 Q (quail) 20 gauge 2-3/4” & 3” 25” IC/IC Straight grip Beavertail forearm w/original box
Description: ---------- SOLD 9/19/24 - pending delivery & inspection - Thanks, Kirk ---------- All-original 'used' SKB 20ga 280 'Quail' 3” chambered 25” ic/ic with original box, end label and brochures. Published dimensions: 14” x 1-1/2” x 2-1/2”. Actual dimensions: 14” x 1-1/2” x 2-3/8” to butt plate. Weight: 6 lbs. 0oz. Straight grip, Beavertaill forearm. Single selective trigger, automatic ejectors, automatic safety. Typical but unique scalloped receiver (similar to Suhl, Merkel, and J.P.Sauer). This is an early Mitsui stamped SKB even though it is a late '78 manufacture. Serial number: S 6289022. I am the original owner. It was a 4-month anniversary gift from my wife who purchased this gun in March of 1979. The original versions of the 280 Q (‘quail’) were available from roughly 1974 through 1978.The Ithaca-SKB Model 280 was introduced in 1971 but was only available in M/F, and IC/M chokes. IC/IC chokes were available starting in 1973 but it was not until the 1974 catalog that a “special quail version with IC/IC” was referenced. The ‘79 and ‘80 catalogs (Mitsui) only list M/F and IC/M chokes but IC/IC re-appears in the 1981 catalog (Mitsui). This is the early and original version of the 280Q engraving with more extensive scroll coverage than later versions. It is actually executed in what is known as a 'hollow background' (fr: fond creux) which provides a little more contrast than traditional burin or graver ‘cuts’ into the metal surface. The background itself is removed and leaves the design ‘standing’. 'Just a neat and unique affect which is only one of several aspects that makes this model such a joy to possess and to hunt with. This was my personal, dedicated woodcock gun. It is quick and deadly in a veteran’s hands for this great game bird over tight-holding pointing breeds in pine plantations or bottomland coverts. I grew-up in SW Louisiana and ended-up in the Pine Belt of Mississippi. My wife grew-up in Baton Rouge and hunted woodcock in the Atchafalaya Basin with her father. So, we are well-acquainted with woodcock over Brittany Spaniels and pointers. Photos are intended to convey general condition of wood and metal finishes, noting the most obvious blemishes at the toe area of the butt stock. The rest of the wood and checkering is 98%. Minor carry wear on tail of the trigger guard and bottom edges of the receiver. I also have a fitted Pachmayr recoil pad because of my 14-1/2” LOP frame, but I contoured the back face of the pad to the curvature of the un-cut butt stock. So, the gun has had no modifications and the 'fit' of the butt plate to butt stock is as you would expect on an un-altered gun. I am including the pad with the gun in case someone with long arms is looking for a nice, quick-handling 20ga for tight cover. 3” shells work great for ducks, as well. I’m old enough to have only used 3" lead shot in this gun – no steel, even though the IC/IC chokes would certainly give you that option. Regarding Inquiries: As a collector & researcher (and 'shooter'), I understand the importance of verifying as many details as possible. I have attempted to represent my items accurately and price them fairly given my current knowledge of firearms production history and details, with a keen recognition and appreciation for the ‘factory’ standards of quality in all aspects. Collectors know that the actual condition/details can only be confirmed, (and can either agree or disagree with the sellers’ valuation), via personal inspection – so it is pointless to waste time (buyer’s and seller’s) making a counter-offer or an attempt to negotiate without benefit of in-person review. Simply put, under NO circumstances will I entertain lower offers. This piece is purposely-priced to sell, yet to a relativley-limited market – those who know what they’re looking at and appreciate what it is. Also, I don't price items high so I can come-down to a comfort level (with price and/or familiarity with what's being offered) of buyers lacking knowledge or confidence at this stage in their shooting or collecting career, or to make egotists feel 'good' about getting the better of someone else. Sorry, but I neither have time for indecision nor tolerance for 'gamesmanship'. I know what I'm offering and am confident in that knowledge and my reasonable valuation (i.e., artistic, aesthetic, and historical value). I'm not the least concerned with what 'market' anyone else plays (or thinks they have figured-out) and therefore am not interested in whatever monetary values or re-sale potential other buyers or sellers base their 'business plan' on. I’m not a dealer. I've made the buying process pretty simple – here’s a gem of a little bird gun - if you want it - this is THE price - send me a check and FFL - Done deal - it's yours. If you don't like the item, just send it back. Right now, you’re just paying for inspection and return privileges. No worries about what someone else might offer because I won't be inclined to entertain any. I'm not in any hurry to give this gun away. Those who are 'watching', I genuinely appreciate your interest although I'm never certain what is being 'watched' (aside from hopes of a price reduction) other than its eventual disappearance to another buyer. If this were an auktion, you would have to compete for it with no in-person inspection (unless you are in attendance), and more importantly, if buying remotely, there are no returns. So, you know the price required to be successful and you have inspection and return privileges with this listing. If you don't know your details and history, it's unfortunate because you have to wade through all the crap and misinformation on the market to find an honest gun at a reasonable value. So, I can relate with your frustration - the market is saturated with over-priced crap usually marketed as something it is NOT - I 'get-it'. It is equally frustrating and just as difficult to sell an honest gun for a reasonable value.
