Bosis, Best Gun boxlock, sxs, 12 Ga. 2 3/4", 26 3/4" bls, 2T, engraved Stefano Pedretti, featured Rule's Episode 26, Mint
Description: BOSIS, Best Gun Boxlock, SxS, 12 Ga., 2 ¾”, 26 3/4” bls, 2T, engraved by Stefano Pedretti. This is an extremely high-quality engraved Anson & Deeley that locks up with the proven Purdey double underlug locking system. This exact gun is featured with a 30 minute video at rogerrule, on YouTube, Special Guns with Roger Rule, Episode 26. It features bushed strikers, beaded fences, a manual safety, two triggers with the front articulated, and the top lever is checkered for either right or left hand. Add to that, the UM6 ejector barrels, choked M/F, which have a smooth concave rib. According to Marco Nobili in his book, The Best Guns, the Boehler type steel as popularly used by most makers for shotgun barrels, increases gun recoil and does not give best results for shot pattern. “Bosis uses UM6 hardened and tempered steel which presents good flexibility and durability with better shot patterns.” The author adds,”The action (of a Bosis gun) is created from a solid block of Cr2 steel which is tempered and hardened”…and finally… “all the external and internal metal parts are hand-finished with a mirror-polish.” Engraving: By Master Stefano Pedretti (see below), the top lever has nice scrolls, as do the fences, the trigger guard, and the long bottom tang that ends with a sculptured point, with border engraving and light scrolls on the top tang and the action sidewalls. Where Pedretti’s work demonstrates his art is the detailed bulino engraving on the bottom of the receiver of a nude woman looking back at two black panthers. Above this scene is the maker’s famous shield with crown, inscribed Luciano Bosis. Stefano’s inscription, G.S.Pedretti* can be found just left of the trigger guard in very small font. Stock: With stunning English root-walnut with strong contrasting black twisting veins figure, the point-pattern checkering is true best-gun, hand checkered at 32 lpi with double borders that wrap around the grip and around the forearm. The finish is the elite French polish oil finish that takes coat after coat with long drying times in between, for a high gloss luster. Dimensions are 1 3/8” x 2” x 14 5/8” to checkered butt; weight: 6 lbs. Condition: Gun is 99% with maker’s case and accessories and although built in 1992, it would appear that has actually never used in the field. The breech face shows no signs of shells fired, barrels are new and ring like chimes. Price: $19,450.00 Seller is the author of The Rifleman’s Rifle (Winchester pre-64 Model 70s), is liquidating his collection and will furnish a Letter of Provenance that this gun is from his collection. Luciano has a big reputation and a small operation. Two others work alongside him to make the guns that bear his name, about twenty per year. His daughter helps her father in the office. In the book, The Italian Gun, by Smith & Morrow, the authors state, “Bosis belongs to Brescia’s elite, unofficial fraternity of handmade gun makers.” They build Anson & Deeley scalloped boxlocks, Holland & Holland sidelocks SxS, and a Boss-style over and under called the Michelangelo model. All three models are best guns. The authors further explain that some gunmakers are guild makers and some are handmade gunmakers. They put Bertuzzi, Purdey, and Holland & Holland in the class of guild makers, while Bosis, Fabbri, and F.lli Rizzini are handmade gunmakers. Quoting from the authors, “They (Bosis artisans) do not use CNC and NC machines.” Marco Nobili in his book, The Best Guns, adds to this, “Very few are the gun makers which are able to do such type of executions (making handmade guns), which are prevailingly manual and handycraft. …Bosis guns are among the best of the best.” About the Engraver: G.S. Pedretti: Giancarlo Pedretti (1947 – 2016), father of Stefano, was born in Gardone Val Trompia within the province of Brescia into a family of gunmakers, hunters and engravers. During the summer of 1960, at the age of thirteen, he began his career as an apprentice at the legendary Beretta bottega, most likely selected because his father and one or more uncles engraved for Beretta. After the Second World War, Beretta had become the primary training school for new gunmakers and engravers in the Valley. Studying under masters such as Tononcelli, Baglioni and Bregoli, Giancarlo’s passion and natural talent blossomed and recognition of his skill and creativity became manifest. Beretta hired him after three years of apprenticeship. During this period, Giancarlo cultivated friendships with and studied the works of such engraving luminaries as Medeci, Galeazzi, Fracassi and Pedersoli. In 1969 Giancarlo became a semi-independent engraver, working at home and taking on his own commissions. In the 1980’s his relationship with the prestigious gunmaker, Abbiatico & Salvinelli, solidified and he began working full time for that firm. After a meeting with Nigel Beaumont, Giancarlo became the first Italian engraver to engrave a Purdey firearm, which he completed in 1990 two years before Stefano joined him. Stefano learned his Bulino and dots technique from his father and the two worked together until Giancarlo died in 2016. Thereafter Stefano continued engraving and running the world-famous studio with three other engravers working for him. His projects include Purdeys, Bosis’, Piotti’s, F.lliRizzini’s, Fabbri’s, and was listed as only one of three engravers that Tony Galazan would use for his famous Boss-style over and under.
