Very Nice English JW Tolley 12 gauge Side by Side Shotgun
Description: James William Tolley was born in 1832 in Birmingham, England. When he was 29 years old he was gunsmithing in St. Mary's Row. Between 1883 and 1903 he introduced both boxlock and sidelock shotguns names "Altro 12" which was said to be a shotgun suitable for for "ordinary game as well as duck or pigeon shooting. Between 1904 and 1909 the company was recorded at 5 regent Place. Tolley died in 1916 and the firm was taken over by Holloway & Naughton and eventually acquired by Skimmin & Wood. While under the control of Tolley , James became a major manufacturer (and one of the largest trade manufacturers) of sporting shotguns and rifles. In order to understand the the type and quality, model and type of Tolley's work, one has to realize that this was a period of invention and perfection far surpassing anything seen either before or during the next 100 years. This is a very nice, 12 guage, extractor with mirror bores and nice furniture as photos shown. The Tolley is tight with no issues, and photos show the fine condition it is in. Safety functions as should and trigger pulkl crisp. Photos reflect the quality of this English double pre 1940. The only reason for selling the English shotguns I have on GunsInternational, is to pass along to others the fine shotguns I have collected over years and no longer use at my age and so others can enjoy. C&R FFL eligible. Priced at $1400. Reasonable offers will be considered.
