Joseph Lang & Sons 12 Bore Trigger Plate Action with Snap Underlever Opening and Cocking – No. 2 of a Pair
Description: *** REDUCED *** This handsome Lang Patent triggerplate action, no 5971, was made in 1880 and utilizes a snap underlever to both open and cock the action. Works naturally and easily. Lang was one of the top tier London makers in the last quarter of the 19th century and this gun has all the indications of a high end quality double gun. Easy opening snap lever, gold cocking indicators on the top strap and a toggle automatic safety. Cased in a canvas and leather case with maker’s label. Weight is 6lb 11oz. *** The gun was rebarreled by the maker’s son, James, who operated his own gunmaking firm until eventually rejoining his brother in the family business. The 29” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. They are topped by a raised solid concave style rib which is inscribed “James Lang London”. The bluing shows thinning and wear. The bores are shiny and bright but there is some mild pitting in the left barrel and a few tiny spots in the right. The right barrel is bored 0.731 with a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The left barrel is also bored 0.731 and has a constriction of 0.005 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. Great upland and clays gun. *** The replacement buttstock is made of nicely figured European walnut. The finish is in good condition and the checkering is crisp. There is a small repaired crack at the rear of the left sideplate. The stock has a full length metal buttplate. The original forearm has refreshed checkering and a repaired crack on the left front edge. Stock dimensions are 14-5/8” including the thin metal buttplate by 1-3/8” by 2”. *** This is an interesting and nice handling double with the latest technology of its era. The snap underlever is an intuitive and ergonomic device and easy and quick to use. It is a sturdy gun and would be a great gun for clays or game. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
