J. Venables & Son 12 Bore Sidelock Ejector with Wonderful Engraving and Nitro Steel Barrels – “Between the Wars” --- No. 2 of a Pair

Description:
John Venables started in business in the mid-19th century in Oxford, site of the famous university. His son joined the firm in the 1880’s and the firm remained in business until 1985! Venables was known for the high quality of his guns and this one, no. 2724 is a beautiful example of his work. Profusely engraved and the straight grip and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut. Checkering is crisp. It has double triggers auto ejectors, and a hidden third fastener for strength. It weighs 6lb 9oz.   ***   The 28” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and have shiny bores. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, 2-1/2” shotshells are available from RST Shotshells, Game Bore, and ARMUSA. The barrels are topped by a solid concave swamped game style rib. The rib is inscribed “J. Venables & Son, Oxford”. The right barrel is bored 0.729 with a constriction of 0.008 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.035. The left barrel is also bored 0.729 and has a constriction of 0.035 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. The bluing is otherwise excellent but it does show a few wear marks possibly from being carried in a leg ‘o mutton case.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut and both the finish and checkering are in excellent condition. Stock dimensions are 14-1/8” by 1-1/2” by 2-14”. Cast off for the righthanded shot.   ***   This double from a famed English provincial maker is in excellent mechanical condition, profusely engraved, and handles like a dream. Perfect for game or clays. You will be proud to uncase it at the range and enjoy carrying it afield.   ***   NOTE: The photographs are part of the description.
