W. Richards 16G Best English Bar Action Hammer Underlever Damascus Shotgun
Description:
Occasionally a really fine firearm comes in which really catches the eye. This is one such gun. Made in the 1860s, it has a very fine provenance having been originally made for Major General Sir Thomas Peyton, 5th Baronet (1817-1888). We have an extensive wriiten history on the maker and the original owner which has been prepared by a true expert, John Smith. Please note that there is no serial number on this gun, perhaps due to it's age, and the only thing that ties the gun to the original owner is the family crest on the stock oval. The author of the provenance book states unequvocally that this is not a forgery!
There is a stunning piece of walnut with absolutely beautiful figuring. The high quality English brown Damascus barrels are stamped .681 and now measure .678/.678. The foreend has an engraved side lever and engraved metal tip.
Trigger pressure is 3#s R and 5#s L. There is a Jones under lever and percussion fences.
All this and in 16 gauge to boot, a rarity in a gun of this age! This is definitely a gun for the collector who knows quality in antique Best English guns.
This firearm is from the Oliver-Brice collection. The principal owned a private equity investment firm in Switzerland which allowed him to travel extensively in the UK and Europe. His passion was finding and researching high quality/investment grade British and European double shotguns. His collection is extensive and includes a number of unique firearms like this one. The owner would consider a trade of a fine/collector watch as he is a collector of those as well.
Please note the maker is not Westley Richards, but W Richards of 51 Old Hall Street Liverpool.
