Unusual Spencer Arms Co. Antique Engraved Shotgun w/Remington Connection
Description: Unusual Spencer Arms Co. Antique Engraved Shotgun w/Remington Connection Offered here and just acquired is a very fine and UNUSUAL antique Remington Model 1887 pump shotgun. History shows that the Spencer Arms and Remington Arms Co. were two separate entities with their own histories, but they did have some connections in the world of firearms manufacturing. The Spencer Arms Company, primarily known for its lever-action rifles in the mid-to-late 1800s, was a significant player in the development of firearms technology. The company was founded by Christopher Spencer in the 1860s, and they gained fame for producing the Spencer repeating rifle, which was used during the American Civil War. Spencer Arms Company also made shotguns and other firearms, but their reputation was mostly built on their rifles. The Remington Arms Co., founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington, is one of the oldest and most well-known American firearm manufacturers. While Remington initially focused on manufacturing rifle barrels, the company expanded into shotguns, handguns, and ammunition. By the 20th century, Remington was a dominant name in firearms and shotguns, producing a wide range of models, including the famous Remington 870 pump-action shotgun. While Spencer Arms and Remington Arms were two distinct companies, there was some overlap in the firearm manufacturing world, and they were contemporaries in certain periods. One important connection is through Remington's acquisition of other firearms manufacturers during the early 20th century. Remington, being a large corporation, absorbed several smaller companies, and Spencer Arms, while never directly part of Remington, was one of those companies whose assets and intellectual property were sometimes incorporated into Remington's production. This specimen a beautifully engraved Model 1887 12 GA pump shotgun by Spencer is the first ENGRAVED specimen as we had the pleasure to acquire in many decades. Serial number 3053 it was made before the turn of the century. It exhibits superb and sharp relief engraving of the period with a banner on receiver denoting “Spencer Arms Co. Apr.’82”. Very fine pistol grip and checkered forearm. The Spencer 1887 shotgun operated on a lever-action mechanism similar to the lever-action rifles of the time. - operated by a large lever located beneath the receiver, which was used to load and cycle the shotgun. When the shooter pressed the lever forward, the breech block would tilt downward, opening the action and ejecting the spent shell casing. Then, the next shell would be automatically loaded into the chamber as the lever was pulled back. However it had a unique rotating breech block which when the lever was worked, the breech block would rotate downward. This movement allowed the spent shell to be ejected and positioned the next shell for loading. Coupling with this Spencer action the 32” MODIFIED barrel is stamped with a Remington barrel address. The last patent number 2,039,814 on the Remington shotgun barrel was issued on April 28, 1936. This would indicate that the shotgun barrel associated with this patent was added to the Spencer shotgun about 90 years old ago. The shotgun is in excellent condition with the great majority of the blued finish on barrel. The stock is in excellent condition as well with a recoil pad and a number of spacers added to the buttstock probably at the same time. Bore excellent. All in all, this is a most unusual and DESIRABLE Spencer Arms shotgun. Prototype? Doubtful. But a fine gunsmith alteration most probably done to have the user handle higher pressure smokeless loads of the 20th century. As a beautiful piece of artwork this will display greatly. For the vintage shotgun enthusiast a very fine and usable shotgun and QUITE POSSIBLY for the expert collector who is well educated and has the ability to access an original Spencer antique shotgun barrel a most potentially VALUABLE “return to original” state of the pre-1900 period.
