J. Stevens Model 325 12-Gauge, Mfg. 1909

Description:

In 1904 the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company introduced a revolutionary hammerless box-lock double-barrel shotgun, the Model 325.  It was the first of an entirely new class of shotgun – the American utility double.  And it was a game changer.  Stevens sold 8,000 guns in its first four years, and by 1920 had sold 270,000 similar guns in various models based on the design.  Stevens patents allowed the company to dominate the domestic affordable double-barrel shotgun market well into the 1930s.  The Model 325 is a rugged gun designed to put food on the table and sit by the door of a small farm or ranch to ward off predators and provide security. This early Model 325 was manufactured in 1909.  Professionally reconditioned a few years ago, it is not only ready to go back to the field but has been there.  The gun has modern shooting dimensions:  1-3/4” drop at the comb, 2-3/4” drop at the heel, and a 14” length of pull.  The grained American walnut stock is attractive.  It is also strong, as a result of the density of the wood and a superb grain alignment which flows through the wrist.  The 28” fluid-steel barrels have 2-12” chambers and bore diameters of .720.  The right barrel is choked improved cylinder and the left modified.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9” from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) are .032/.042/.047 and at the middle of the barrel are.035/.044/.052.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .043/.030/.035 and .045/.031/.042, respectively.  This gun weight 7 pounds 10 ounces.  Both triggers pull at 6 pounds of pressure.  It is on-face and locks up tightly.  All serial numbers, 9495, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired on the range and in the field using modern shells.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing.
