Rare Scholefield Goodman & Sons London & Birmingham 8 Gauge Engraved SxS Double Barrel Breechloading Shotgun
Description: Very Rare Scholefield, Goodman & Sons, London & Birmingham, 8 Gauge Engraved Double Barrel Breechloading Hammer Shotgun, 8 GA, mfg. circa 1890. This is a wonderful big 8 Gauge double gun in lovely original condition. Big bore shotguns such as this were the weapon of choice for both commercial market hunters and wealthy sportsmen alike during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and it's also worth noting for any Western fans that this gun is the exact size and configuration of the 8 Gauge carried by Everett Hitch in the 2008 movie "Appaloosa". Scholefield, Goodman & Sons was a merchant firm with interest in dealing guns founded during the 1770's which existed under different names and ownerships well into the 20th century with stores in both Birmingham and London. The gun features Birmingham proofed 36" long twist barrels which feature a wide full-length matted rib fitted with a brass bead front sight. The rib is stamped "TRADE MARK" encircling a shield and crossed spears over the breech with "SCHOLEFIELD LONDON & BIRMINGHAM" inscribed within a panel just ahead. The frame, locks, and furniture are nicely engraved in elegant English scrolls. Serial number "86628" stamped on the frame (water table), barrels, and forend. The barrels have a pleasing smooth dark plum/chocolate patina while the frame has a mottled silver/black finish with sharp edges and engraving. The stock is well figured having a checkered pistolgrip and forend with nickel silver nameplate and retains a wonderfully aged untouched finish throughout showing an attractive blackened patina beginning to form. The toe of the buttstock has a 1" crack visible on either side that has been secured long ago with a small brass screw and there is an old thing 1 1/4" chip along the left rear edge of the forearm. Overall the wood is very nice especially for an 8 Gauge considering the hard use these guns typically saw. Beautiful checkered horn buttplate features a relief panel scene of a family of deer and remains solid with no cracks and just a little light scuffing along the left edge. The forend tip which was probably also horn originally has been neatly replaced in period with wood. The actions feature rebounding safeties and both are perfectly crisp and function flawlessly. Original firing pins are freely moving and cartridge extractor works properly. The barrels open and securely snap shut with a little typical play against the frame but nothing major. Bores are near mirror bright with some light blackpowder frosting scattered throughout. The barrels appear solid as a rock with sound ribs and no dents or dings. Weight is a hefty yet manageable 12 lbs 3 oz and the gun handles quite nicely. A super honest and fine original 8 Gauge!
