Find us online or on Facebook! Massive and Very Rare Percussion 4 Bore Ship's Rail Swivel Gun, 4 Ga smoothbore, mfg. ca. 1810-1820. Photos do not come close to describing the stunning size of this beast! The gun was originally built as a flintlock and later received a professional military conversion to percussion. The breech is dated "1832" forward of the bolster and is likely the date of conversion. There are small proof marks and numbers stamped throughout on various parts though no maker's name is present. The gun would have been mounted atop the rail of a ship and fired either a 1/4 lb ball for defense against other ships, or assorted smaller balls & shot for use against personnel. Within the last century or so the gun was briefly used as a punt gun for harvesting wild ducks and geese. This is the very gun that can be seen in "The Gun Nuts" youtube video "Firing a 2 Gauge Punt Gun", which to date is the most viewed video on theregarding the history of punt guns. The gun weighs just over 33 lbs. The barrel measures 42 1/4" long with a bore ID of approximately 1.05". The breech is 2 3/8" wide and the hammer stands 4 3/4" tall! The metal has a beautiful dark plum patina having never been cleaned or otherwise touched. The stock is of equally large proportions, featuring a 2 5/8" x 2" wrist with a massive chamfered forearm. The wood has a wonderfully untouched original finish, showing dark blackened patina in protected areas. Aside from a 7/8" crack forward of the rear lock screw there are no additional cracks, chips, or repairs, which is quite amazing considering the age and size of this gun. The wood really is in phenomenal condition. Large iron military style buttplate, sideplate, and triggerguard, with huge forged swivel yolk affixed to the forestock by way of a keyed bolt. Large brass bead front sight likely added during the gun's duck hunting days. The action is crisp and strong, functioning flawlessly. The nipple is a clean original. There is no provision for a ramrod as the gun would have been loaded on deck with separate accoutrements. Guns of this size and condition rarely come up for sale. This is a piece that demands attention and is a wildly impressive addition to any collection. We can ship this gun anywhere and will package it very securely within a crate. Buyer to expect higher shipping costs than typical due to size, weight, and value. No FFL required on pre-1899 firearms.
