Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare J. R. Evans/C. G. Bonehill, Birmingham, England 8 Gauge Toplever Double Barrel Breechloading Hammer Shotgun, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1880. This piece comes directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns and is a great example of a real deal market gun that saw countless years of use along the Eastern shore. Huge shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis to supply local markets and hotels. The massive Birmingham proofed Damascus barrels measure 35" long and feature a large brass blade front sight. The 3/4" wide upper rib is inscribed "J. R. EVANS LONDON FINE DAMASCUS" with "J.R.EVANS" marked on both locks. Evans was a trade name used by popular shotgun manufacturer C. G. Bonehill likely for an unidentified American retailer. The gun is nicely engraved throughout with scrollwork and images of waterfowl in flight. The metal shows heavy wear with a very rich dark plum patina throughout. The stock features a checkered pistol grip and forearm with a brass nameplate. The forend tip is missing. The checkering has worn nearly smooth in places and the wood has an untouched blackened patina acquired from decades of use. Aside from a couple small old chips along the edges of the forearm the stock has survived without any additional cracks, chips, or repairs. Original steel buttplate. Matching serial number "35541" marked on the barrels, forearm, and water table. Both hammers are matching originals (one screw period replaced) and both actions are crisp and function perfectly complete with rebounding safeties. Both original firing pins move freely. The barrels open and latch shut properly however they are extremely off-face and considerably loose against the frame when closed. The tubes themselves are thick walled with no dents. The last 12" of the upper rib has been re-soldered during the period of use. The bores are relatively bright and could certainly benefit from a good proper cleaning. They show moderate blackpowder frosting and fine pinprick surface pitting scattered throughout. The gun weighs a formidable 13 lbs 5 oz. A rare relic from the bygone days of outlaw market gunners! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions. Buyers must be 21 years of age or older and have no felony convictions to purchase antique firearms.
