Scarce Pre-WWI J.P. Sauer & Son Boxlock Game-Gun, 12 Gauge with Krupp-Steel Barrels, Mfg. 1909 in Suhl, Prussia
Description: Pre-World War I, Grade No. 2 Sauer & Son boxlocks are scarce. This 12-gauge game-gun was made in Suhl, Prussia in 1909. It weighs only 6 pounds 4 ounces. The high-end NY retail firm of Schoverling, Daly & Gales had exclusive distribution rights at the time. Its 1909 catalog highlights the Krupp fluid-steel barrels, round cross bolt, handsome engraving, and extra selected walnut stock. It’s $100 list price was the same as the fourth quality-level premier American made guns (such as the Parker-D-grade and the Ithaca-Quality-No. 4). Pre-WWI Sauer doubles are similar to the Charles Daly line sold by SD&G, when compared at the same price levels. In fact, the locks used on some Daly doubles at this time were manufactured by Sauer. This gun is built around an Anson Deeley boxlock with a Purdey-double-under-bolt locking system and a Greener-style top bolt. These features were not available in any American-made double. The 26” Krupp steel barrels have 2-3/4” chambers, are choked improved cylinder and full, and weight only 2 pounds 15 ounces. They throw and ideal pattern for hunting upland game. The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9” from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .037/.029/.034, and at the middle of the barrel .040/.032/.035. The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .041/.033/.032 and .045/.037/.043, respectively. The exteriors of the barrels, as reconditioned, are without flaws: the bores are bright. The stock is made of European walnut and has perfect grain alignment. The beauty of the wood, along with its natural oils, are restored by a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish. The forend uses a Deeley & Edge latch. The DAC is 1-1/2”; the DAH is 2-5/8”; and the LOP to the end of the original horn buttplate is 14-1/4”. The cast is neutral. The gun is on-face and locks-up tightly. The right trigger pulls at 4-1/2 pounds of pressure, and the left at 5-1/2 pounds. All serial numbers, 150351, match. The price does not include shipping costs, which are paid by the buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired on the range and in the field on a number of occasions using standard target and game loads. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing. Price: $2,750.00 Curio/Relic: Yes Contact Seller |
