Guns International #: 100502048
This Remington Model 1889, serial number 201813, was manufactured in 1900. Remington produced this model until 1908. Remington Damascus barreled hammer guns, along with those made by Ithaca, LC Smith, and others in the 1880s and 1890s, may have not been the guns that “won the West” but they were certainly the guns that settled the West (and Midwest). This gun was probably first owned by a farmer or rancher who used it to put food on the table and control predators.
This vintage shotgun is properly restored to bring it back to the condition similar to or better than it would have been after 4 or 5 years of use by the original owner. The wood, as refinished with hand rubbed stock oil, is beautiful and solid. The symmetry of the grain at the throat of the stock, especially when viewed from the top near the tang, is remarkable and attests to the craftsmanship put into making this gun over a century ago. The Oxford Crolle pattern in the Damascus steel is distinct, as refinished, and the lettering on the barrel rib is deep and crisp. The bores are bright as honed. The color case hardening, which was redone by Classic Guns in Crete, IL, is brilliant.
The 30” barrels are choked Modified (.020) and Full (.032). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 050/.048/.041 and at the middle of the barrel is .053/.051/.046; the left barrel is .043/.045/.047 and .047/.049/.051, respectively. Bores 9” from the breach are .728/.728 respectively. Chambers are 2-3/4”. The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to right of center. This shotgun weighs 7 lb 9 oz. The drop at the comb is 2-1/8 and at the heel 3-1/8”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the original butt plate is 14”. All serial numbers match.
