Purdey Island Lock w/ second pattern thumbhole under lever and rebounding locks, rare1869 gun completely restored and London nitro-proofed in case
Description: This 1869 Purdey island lock is very unique and rare, 2001 London nitro proved for 2 3/4 inch cartridges (I use classic 2 1/2 English 30 gram light game loads and have killed pheasants in 2 different driven shoots in Canada and USA with it) and choked and regulated by Ken Eyster to throw light mod and mod patterns with the original best 4 iron twist Damascus 29 inch barrels (29 inch was what Purdey thought a properly scaled and balanced 12 bore should have). It has been completely properly restored and new springs made in England, then sent to Ken Eyster for choking and regulation and test firing by the previous owner, Joe Toot. That regulation sheet with pattern details is pictured and will be provided. 15" LOP from front trigger to center of pigskin buttpad. 1 3/8 in DAC and 2 1/16 DAH. Very good modern type dimensions, and a real lovely balanced gun, almost as well balanced as a best percussion gun. Nothing handles like these early breech loading Purdey's. It has several unique features for a gun of the late transition from percussion to breech loader era: Rebounding locks/ Purdey had some patents- most hammerguns then (especially cheaper ones) were not yet rebounding and featured a half-cock like percussion guns. Purdey’s 2nd pattern thumbhole patent opening- ergonomically excellent, most reliable devised opening lever ever in my opinion especially for a hammergun (you can open and unload with the hammers still cocked). The first guns to utilize the then patented Purdey double underbite sliding locking lug- later adopted industry wide globally as the standard after the patent expiration and ubiquitous today still- best ever developed for a SxS. The unique early “safety” bar under the grip! A Purdey design to charge more and make his guns more unique of course. I think it was more for mental piece of mind at the time as some older sportsmen were still wary of the breechloaders and clung to percussion! And of course the wonderful Purdey Island lock action- the favorite of Ripon, Walsingham, King Edward Vll and George V and the great shots of the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was still made well into the 20th century for the top shots in England and various royalty and maharajas who still wanted hammers. This early Purdey island lock frame is beautifully rounded and svelte- note that the engraving only states “Purdey” and the original barrels also feature the correct Oxford street address. The firm became styled “Purdey and Sons” only some years later just before the move to Audley House and James Jr took the reins. Purdey may have sourced these beautiful barrels from the best barrel-maker in London in those days, Charles Lancaster, as they were friends from the days they worked for Joseph Manton together, along with Thomas Boss. This is the number two gun from an early matched pair- it's twin is also still in great working order and owned by a collector in England! The original order record from Purdey's "dimension books" is pictured here. A beautiful historic gun which you can not just appreciate but shoot today! It has been properly stored for about 9 years in my collection and wiped down every 6 months. In a late period oak and leather English case befitting the gun. Priced to sell.
