Purdey Bar-in-Wood 12 bore thumblever, excellent condition, rebounding hammers, great dimensions with historic provenance
Description: This 1873 Purdey is in remarkable condition and has wonderful dimensions. It is the number 2 gun of a trio of game guns built for Lord Alfred Pagett, fourth son of the Marquess of Anglesey and was Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshall to Queen Victoria for over 20 years. He was a world renowned Yachtsman and champion racer (before they officially started the Americas cup) as well as avid sportman and shot wth the then Prince of Wales (who the queen expected him to watch over for her), later King Edward Vll, regularly. Pagett accompanied the Prince on his first Indian trip and hunted there with him, so this gun probably made that trip as well. Photo attached. The 30 inch barrels are a beautiful highest quality damascus four iron twist or course, clean with no pits, minimum wall thicknesses are .023, no dings The engraving is still sharp, and the patina of age is there of course, but no rust and I'm sure Pagett had Purdey replace the lockwork to be rebounding at some point. David Maynard, the great former Purdey historian sent me the info from the dimension books record on the gun (photo attached). No cracks, wood all original including the checkered butt. Anson forend release. Serial numbers all match, nothing buggered as this gun was well cared for. I have shot this gun with light low pressure 2 1/2 inch RST and B&P cartridges quite successfully at pheasant. I love the Purdey second pattent thumblever opening also as it is so much more convenient Vs. a toplever on a hammergun. At 6 pounds 9.5 oz a joy to handle with 14 9/16 LOP to checkered butt, 1 1/2 in DAC and 2 1/4 in DAH. 1/8 cast off at face, about 3/8 at toe. A wonderful 151 year old piece of history you can shoot and be proud to own.
