This shotgun started life as a 450 BPE Double rifle and was converted to a shotgun via sleeving at some unknown time in England. *Note the sleeving letters on both left and right barrels. With a new blacking job we can have this removed. It would be wonderful (while obviously not necessary) for the next owner to have an extra set of double rifle barrels made for this work of gun art. Purdey estimates around 40K pounds for this service. This sounds like a lot but then again you would have a Purdey double rifle in your chosen caliber for around 60K$.
This would make a great Sporting clays or Vintager competition gun. Being proofed for 2 3/4" it would easily digest many of the American retailed shells. Also unusual about this gun is it is a hammerless gun with a Jones underlever but still features the Beasley patent and Purdey flagship a true self opening mechanism.
I was excited to learn something new about the English gun trade from the Purdey records on this gun.
The record says "Scroll detonating" which according to Purdey\'s indicates the deep chisel fences and possibly was not done by the engraver but by the finisher. Fascinating! *** Note: To see this gun with high resolution photos and a zoom-in feature, go to the vintagedoubles main site and search for the gun ID: 4163 or browse the main site to see our full gun collection.

James Purdey & Sons 20g. with exceptional and breathtaking engraving!
Description: Hammerless Sidelocks - The outstanding thing about this little gun is the extraordinary engraved fences and scroll engraving. This is exceedingly beautiful and extremely rare on a Purdey. According to Purdey records the gun was completed August 15th 1891 for a H.R. Magniac. Our research shows he was a Captain in the Boer war between 1899 and 1902. Records show he was wounded. This shotgun started life as a 450 BPE Double rifle and was converted to a shotgun via sleeving at some unknown time in England. *Note the sleeving letters on both left and right barrels.
