James Purdey & Sons 12 Bore Sidelock Ejector Pigeon Gun – Excellent Condition
Description: *** SOLD *** Recently serviced in London under the direction of the late, great Cyril Adams at which time the stock and forearm were refinished, the barrels and other metal parts were re-blacked, the chokes were adjusted, and of course it was stripped and cleaned. This responsive and great handling pigeon gun is nitro proofed for 1-1/4 oz. 2-3/4" shotshells as confirmed by in a letter from Nick Harlow at Purdeys. It is, of course, a Beesley action with disc set strikers, sideclips, and a third bite. The safety has been blocked into the “fire” position. Purdey number 16811 was made in 1901 but looks and feels like it was just manufactured. Weight is 7lb 12oz. Presented in its oak & leather case with maker’s label, two-piece mahogany cleaning rod and tools. *** The 30” chopper lump barrels are topped by a raised solid concave hand crosshatched rib. The bores are shiny and the bluing is perfect. The top of the left barrel is inscribed “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London.” The top of the right barrel is inscribed “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid-Pressed Steel.” Ivory beads are mounted at the muzzle and mid-rib. The barrels are chambered and nitro proofed for 2-3/4” cartridges as confirmed by Nick Harlow at Purdeys. The right barrel is bored 0.733 with a constriction of 0.021 for Modified(Half) choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. The left barrel is bored 0.734 and has a constriction of 0.037 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. *** The straight hand stock and beavertail forearm are made of well figured French walnut. The gun was restocked by the Purdey-trained stockist at Griffin & Howe. The wood was refinished and checkering refreshed while in London in 2020. Stock dimensions are 15” including a 7/8” Silvers style recoil pad by 1-1/2” by 2”. Cast off for the righthand shot. *** It is not often that a Purdey pigeon gun becomes available. This one handles better than any of the others I have ever seen. It’s been refinished under the guidance of one of the top doublegun shooters in our lifetime. Isn’t it time to reward yourself with something special? Don’t let it slip away. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense. SOLD |
