Winchester M97 Riot Gun
Description: History: My father worked in a small, rural bank, in east central Indiana. It was the perfect target for those robbing small banks, near state lines, in the 20’s and 30’s. At some point it was decided that it would be a good idea to provide employees with the ability to defend themselves and the decision was made to keep a “riot” gun hidden in the back of the vault. I first took notice of the gun when I would go visit my dad at work in the mid-60’s. Of course, I was never allowed to touch it, but it sure was tempting. The bank was purchased in the early 70’s and the shotgun was removed from the vault and placed in a closet in the basement. The gun was gifted to my dad when he retired from the bank in 1984. The gun: The barrel is choked "CYL" which would be expected of a shotgun for the intended purpose of crowd control. The bluing is deep, and the only wear is along the magazine tube and even that is minimal. The condition of the receive is interesting. If you look at the area immediately surrounding the elector spring (on the left side of the receiver), you can clearly see the bluing encircling it. Additionally, there is still some bluing surrounding the left and right-side magazine release buttons. I have no idea when or why that would have happened but it appears to be wear and not that someone removed the finish.. It's only speculation but I wonder if the gun was sent back to Winchester after WW1 to be restocked and rebarreled. Asking $900 + shipping to your FFL. Additional photos available upon request. Please PM me if you have any questions about the provenance or details about the gun. It’s my hope that I fan find a home where someone will appreciate it for what it is.
