Up for sale is a Merkel 203E, over/under, 20 gauge shotgun.... UNFIRED.
I was never a shotgun enthusiast. I shot competitive bullseye pistol but I came across this shotgun at an estate sale. Back in the late 70's and early 80's, a doctor bought high-end firearms as a hedge against soaring inflation. He simply stored them in Arizona and his children sold them after he died.
I do not know a lot about shotguns and anyone interested in this one would probably know more than me. So... I'll tell you what I THINK I know and if I am wrong, I wills stand corrected.
The barrel is marked “70” which I take to mean. 70 mm or that the chamber is 2 3/4” . Near the proof mark is the number 7/80 which I'm told means July, 1980, the date of manufacture. On the barrel are two dots which I'm told is the barrels choke... Improved Cylinder. Since there are only one set of dots, I assume that both barrels have the same choke. I'm told that at all adds up to a trap shotgun. On the exterior bottom amid the engraving, there is the word “Shula” and on the exterior side it also marked “Shula” and GDR (East Germany). The barrel length is 28”. Double triggers.
I understand that these shotguns in 20 guage are somewhat scarce compared to the 12 gauge models.
I'm told that this is a side lock shotgun with side-plates that can be removed for repair and maintenance, although I have never done so. There is a black lever on the side which I understand gives access to the interior.
Engraving is elaborate and precise. The wood is gorgeous. I have taken a number of photos that show the detail of this shotgun. If I have missed something, please tell me and I can try to photograph it. Condition is, of course... new.
The aftermarket case is included.
LATER: A fellow who knows more about shotguns than me had me do some measurment photos. He tells me that the
Drop at Comb" is about 1.5' or maybe 1 9/16". The "Drop at Heal" is 2 3/8" If anyone wishes, I can share those photos.
