LC Smith Crown Grade SXS Shotgun 20 Gauge Two 28" Barrel Sets Three Forearms
Description: Hunter Arms LC Smith Crown Grade SXS Shotgun Two Barrel Sets Three Forearms Shipped 1931 Only 890 Crown Grade shotguns were manufactured by Hunter Arms Co. and the L.C. Smith Gun Co. between 1913 and 1945. This rare Crown Grade 20ga was built to order and shipped in 1931 in a rather unique nature. It features 2 sets of barrels. On one of these barrels, as stated in the Cody Museum letter, are the 28 inches in length with a ventilated rib, 2 ¾ inch chambers, and a beavertail forearm. An Ivory bead and Curtis latch are additional upgraded features. The matte ventilated rib is engraved near the breech, "L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE" on the right barrel and "MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS Co. FULTON, N.Y." on the left. This barrel is choked full on the left and modified on the right. The mid-bead is missing on this set of barrels. The second set of barrels has an identical ventilated rib but combines this with a serial matching splinter forearm. This forearm also has a Curtis latch and has a ebony forearm tip that the beavertail lacks. This set of barrel does seems to have thinner markings and more wear from use. These barrels are also marked "L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE" on the right barrel and "MADE TO ORDER BY THE HUNTER ARMS Co. FULTON, N.Y." on the left. This barrel has 2 ½ inch cambers, an ivory bead front sight, is choked modified on the left and improved cylinder on the right. A third splinter forearm with matching numbers is also included. Both splinter forearms have a very intricate repair in the middle of the forearm. Both barrels have what appears to be plugged holes in front of the forearms in the under rib. This would indicate that the barrels have been refinished. Considering the condition of these barrels it is our opinion that these may have been done by the factory or early in the life of this shotgun. The work is resplendent with the classic wear of a much loved field gun, that is consistent with the age of the gun. Each barrel has a 1 3/8 inch wedge of fine scroll engraving just forward of the breech, and automatic ejectors. The receiver is fully engraved with fine scroll, leafy foliate designs, and hunting dogs on the lock plates, with a pair of pointers on the right and setters on the left. The trigger guard and break lever are also finely engraved with a gold inlaid crown on top of the lever. The color cased finish is bright and shows it original rainbow of colors, though worn on the bottom from field use. The receiver is marked on the trigger plate for the Hunter One single selective trigger. All visible serial numbers are matching on both barrel and all three forearms. Drop at comb 1 5/8ths inches; drop at heel 1 ¾ inches; length of pull 14 3/8ths inches. This shotgun is certainly unusual and maybe unique. It represent the pinnacle of American made shotguns.
