This is an Ideal Grade model of the L.C. Smith product line. L.C. Smith shotguns are relatively hard to find and were made to very exacting standards. The Ideal Grade is essentially the second most common model, but its production numbers are far lower than the common Field Grade with 26,686 produced verses 199,384 manufactured for the latter. The Ideal model comes with silver mid and front sighting beads and a tall rib. This example is equipped with double triggers but does not have auto-ejectors. The barrels are made of London steel. Most of the bluing has worn away with time. The bore of each barrel is in excellent condition. The main issue with the barrels is the rib. There is a split in the soft solder on either side of the rib. For the right side this is 3.25 inches from the back of the rib to 0.5 inches short of the mid bead. On the left side this is 2.625 inches from the back end of the barrel to 0.875 inches short of the mid bead. There is no reason why this development could not be repaired however. Simply redoing the soft solder should fix this issue. The safety no longer engages automatically when the action is closed after loading/reloading. This can be beneficial if needing a quick follow-up pair of shots. The safety can still be engaged manually. The engraving on the receiver is quite elegant though the case hardening has long since faded. The wood has a good finish to it. A butt pad has been added. Of the total 26,686 Ideal Grade shotguns produced, only 3,659 were in 20-gauge. This shotgun would make a terrific project for those who like to restore older firearms.
