Ithaca 4E 12 Gauge– JOSEPH LOY ENGRAVED, FANTASTIC!
vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1909, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 15oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 1/4", DAH 2 3/4", DAC 1 11/16" Serial Number: 188599 The Ithaca Gun Co. sold more double shotguns than any other American maker of its time…by a very long margin. The prices, grade for grade, were competitive with the other makers, i.e. Parker, L.C. Smith, Lefever, A.H. Fox, but they sold soooo many more guns. The buying public found Ithaca a better gun. My own observation is that, grade for grade, Ithaca doubles had better wood, far better checkering, often superior engraving, and equal mechanics and handling characteristics compared to the other makers. In today’s world of vintage American doubles, Ithaca is an undervalued vintage double shotgun. The Flues Model particularly is a great example, being the longest running model in the Ithaca line-up. The Flues Model came out in 1909 and was in constant production through 1926, a 17-year run! There were over 250,000 Flues Models produced, an amount equal to all of Parker Brothers 65 years of production! This fine Flues Model is A VERY SPECIAL AMERICAN DOUBLE GUN THAT DESERVES CLOSE INSPECTION AS IT WAS ENGRAVED BY ONE OF AMERICA’S GREATEST ENGRAVERS, JOSEPH LOY. If you have Walt Snyder’s book, “THE ITHACA GUN COMPANY, FROM THE BEGINNING” second edition, look at pages 168 and 169 showing a signed Loy engraved gun. Look at the top view of the action and you will see this gun is done by the same hand, the hand of Joseph Loy. The engraving on pre-1915 Flues Grade 4 guns was much different than post 1915 guns, as at that time they made changes to speed up production. The earlier engraving was simply fantastic with finely detailed English style scroll, finely defined dogs and game animals, and profuse coverage with ornate borders. There are none better than the example being offered here for sale. This gun has had the barrels expertly rust blued and the wood restored with a hand-rubbed linseed oil BEST ENGLISH STYLE finish, and the checkering was recut to perfection. This is a stunningly beautiful shotgun! The mechanics are in perfect working order and the action and forend iron have been stripped to the smallest part and cleaned in the Ultrasonic cleaner, each part scrubbed, inspected for function and integrity, lubricated and reassembled, making this a VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY (a $275 value). The barrels are tight on hinge pin and breech face, bores are excellent, double ivory beads intact, rib matting and engraving on the barrels sharp and clear, ribs are tight…just a perfect set of barrels. The trigger guard is beautifully engraved and retains the original factory finish, as does the receiver with 65% factory case color. The stock is highly figured walnut with the Ithaca ornate flor-de-lis checkering pattern laced with ribbons. Examine the photos and I am sure you will agree the aesthetics of this shotgun surpass all other maker’s Grade 4 offerings. The restoration work done to this gun is perfection and adds to the value and desirability of the gun. It even has good stock dimensions for the modern shooter. A grand investment opportunity for a gun that will grow in value as you enjoy it use and an American masterpiece of the gunmaker’s art. Thanks for looking!
