Wm. Morton 20 Bore Hammergun with 29” Highly Figured Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: Handsome William Morton back action hammergun with rebounding hammers, peninsula locks, and rotary underlever opening. It is equipped with low hammers and the action can be opened when the hammers are cocked. Morton was a London gunmaker known for the quality of his work. This hammergun, no. 1159, was made circa 1878 – 1882. The engraving is very crisp and the Morton name appears in a banner on each side of the action body. It has extractors, heel and toe plates, and nicely figured French walnut stock and splinter forearm. Very good mechanical and cosmetic condition. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 2oz. Not too light to be whippy. Great handling with a balance point just ahead of the center of the hinge pin. The 29” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels have been expertly re-browned and are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are available in the US from ARMUSA, Gamebore, and RST. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave rib which is inscribed “Wm. Morton No. 1159”. The barrels were reproofed for smokeless powders and the bore diameters were noted on the flats as 0.618 Right and 0.630 Left. The right bore measures 0.618 with a constriction of 0.001 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The left bore measures 0.631 with a constriction of 0.030 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. The straight grip and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured French walnut that has recently been professionally refinished. The checkering has been refreshed and is crisp. There are a few handling marks on the stock and a scuff on the right side of the buttstock near the heel. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” by 1-5/8” by 2-1/4”. Neutral cast. Small bore British hammerguns with long barrels and original Damascus barrels are very hard to find and do not become available very often. This great handling hammergun won’t last long. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
