Engraved Double Barrel Used in John Wayne’s Films!
Description: JOHN WAYNE BATJAC Greener SxS Hammer Shotgun Engraved Double Barrel Used in John Wayne’s Films! Here we present a W.W. Greener Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun in 10 Gauge, manufactured circa 1878 in Birmingham, England, Marked “BATJAC”. This one is marked “W. W. GREENER” on either side of the frame surrounded by nice scroll engraving. Both the stock and the frame are marked “BATJAC”, which was John Wayne’s production company founded in 1952 in order to enable him to self-produce and have more artistic license. Some of his most famous films were produced by this company, such as Big Jim McLain, Hondo, McLintock!, The Green Berets, Chisum, Rio Lobo, Big Jake, etc. In all, about 29 films and TV specials were produced from 1952 to 1974. Of course, they need props and firearms for these films, which were mostly Westerns. The Greener family has been involved with gunmaking from 1829 to the present day. Greener served his apprenticeship with John Gardner in Newcastle prior to working for Joseph Manton, who was probably the best gunmaker in England in the early 1800s. In 1829 he set up his own shop in Newcastle making percussion muzzle loading sporting and military shotguns and rifles, as well as harpoon guns for the Dundee Whalers. He moved to Birmingham in 1844. The family business continues to this day with his great grandson. The overall condition is very good. The steel has a gray patina throughout. The markings and engravings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock has a short crack below the left lock that has been worn smooth with use. The bores are dark. The actions are excellent. Here is a fantastic shotgun that you may be able to identify in one of John Wayne’s films! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels: 27-1/2 inches.
