John Dickson & Son Rotary Underlever 12 Bore Hammergun with Highly Figured Nitro 30” Damascus Barrels – No. 3 of a Trio and a Charles Gordon Gun
Description:
*** JUST IN FROM THE DICKSON WORKSHOP IN SCOTLAND *** On first glance, this vintage hammer built in 1890 appears to be well out of period with its Jones Rotary underlever and non-rebounding locks. This can all be explained by the fact the gun was built for Charles Gordon. This gun is the No. 3 of a trio of guns delivered to him and one of the sixteen guns he took delivery of in 1890.
Charles Gordon guns are a rare thing to come across and we are in the privileged position to now offer one of his guns for sale. This is one of the forty-one 12 bore breech-loading guns that Gordon ordered from John Dickson & Son between 1868 and 1906.
The gun is in good condition inside and out with full classic Sumner scroll engraving for the period. The gun utilizes one of the large action types and so some material has been machined out of the bar during manufacture to help lighten it, but it still weighs in just over 7lbs. The gun is fitted with a nicely figured replacement stock but still incorporates its extended steel heel plate. The barrels are fine Damascus and benefit from 2 3/4in (70mm)chambers with the necessary reproof. To prepare the gun for sale, Dicksons have given it a full service, picked up all the engraving on the furniture and pins, oiled and polished the stock and fore-end, cleaned out the checkering and re-blacked the furniture.
This very handsome Dickson 12 bore Hammergun has highly figured nitro Damascus barrels and nicely figured French walnut stock and forearm. Sharp Sumner engraving. Double triggers, extractors, pendulum forearm, and sprung strikers.
The 30” highly figured Damascus barrels have been reproofed for 2-3/4’ shotshells. The bores are shiny and the barrels have been expertly re-browned. The barrels are topped by a raised solid tapered concave style rib. It is inscribed “John Dickson & Son 63 Princes Street Edinburgh”. The right barrel is bored 0.743 with a constriction of 0.003 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021. The left barrel is bored 0.745 and has a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021.
The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured European walnut. The checkering is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-1/2” by 1-1/4” by 1-3/4”. Cast off 3/8” for the righthand shot.
This is your chance to own a beautiful Dickson hammergun once owned by the famous Charles Gordon. It handles nicely and will give its new owner a lot of pleasure over the years to come.
