As you are pobably aware, there are plenty of Wells Fargo fakes on the market, stamped in the 1970s and 1980s, mostly on cheap Belgian guns to enhance their value. Unfortunately there are no Wells Fargo records that could authenticate firearms issued to their agents. Even a Colt factory letter wouldnt help authenticate a gun like this because Colt didnt ship guns to Wells Fargo directly. Instead, they were purchased by individual agents from harware stores and other retailers and all individually marked by local engravers. The only way to authenticate a Wells Fargo gun 100% is through a verifyable provenance. This particular gun doesnt have any provenance but if you google " Wells Fargo Colt 1878 shotgun" you will find 4-5 listings of the Wells Fargo Colt 1878 shotguns in exact same configuration sold in the last 2 years.
