SCARCE Antique COLT Model 1883 Hammerless SHOTGUN
Description: SCARCE Antique COLT Model 1883 Hammerless SHOTGUN Made in 1886 with Damascus Barrels! Here we present an antique Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Double Barrel Shotgun, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1886. The Model 1883 was made from 1883 to 1895, with approximately 7,360 manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were often custom made to order and fitted with Damascus barrels, as this one is, from 28 to 32 inches in length. According to one source, “the Hammerless Model 1883 ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1883 series.” This one features very nice grain in the stock and has been handsomely engraved. The barrel address is “COLT’S PT F A MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA”. The underside of the frame is marked “PATENTED/AUG.22 SEPT.19 1882”. The gun is fitted with 2 ¾ chambers, improved cylinder/modified chokes, and a 14 1/8 Length of Pull. The overall condition is very good. The Damascene pattern remains strong on the barrels. The case colors are largely silvered though some remain visible. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The bores are clean, smooth and bright. The action for the right barrel remains strong and crisp. The action for the left barrel is not currently functional. This is a very handsome shotgun that Flayderman described as “Among finest quality firearms made in Colt’s long history…ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade.” Own the original!
