Description: Scarce Antique COLT Model 1878 Hammer SHOTGUN Double Barrel 12 Gauge Made in 1880 Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun in 12 Gauge, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1880. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parkers. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. Manufactured from 1878-1889, the Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special order item. This double trigger shotgun is a 12 gauge with 29 1/2 inch barrels. According to one source, “the Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.” The overall condition is very good. The old Damascene pattern remains strong. There is a dark brown finish on the barrels. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock is in good shape, smooth and solid, and appears to have been lightly refinished at some point. The bores are in very good condition, bright and smooth. The actions remain excellent.
