COLT MODEL 1883 DOUBLE BARREL HAMMERLESS SHOTGUN, GRADE 1, 10 gauge, 3” CHAMBERS, 28” BARRELS
Description: This is a Colt Model 1883 Deluxe Grade 1, side by side, 10-gauge shotgun. These guns were manufactured Colt from 1883 through 1895. This gun, serial number 4125, was likely manufactured in 1889. This is a box lock action shotgun with 28-inch Damascus barrels. The chokings are unknown and the chambers appear to be 3 inches. The barrels have double locking lugs and a raised solid rib with a brass bead front sight. The shotgun has double triggers, extractors, and an automatic tang safety. The receiver has minor engraving in the area of the hinge pin, along its borders, on the trigger guard, the upper tang, the release lever, and the rear metal portion of the forearm. The walnut stock is finely checkered, has a German silver oval escutcheon, and a black Colt “Rampant Colt” hard rubber butt plate. The length of pull is approximately 14 inches. The splinter forearm is finely checkered and has a black inlay at its front. The gun’s metal and wood finishes are reflective of its age. The gun’s lockup is as expected with the release lever dead center. Dry firing the gun reveals a slightly different sound on the right barrel as compared to the left’s which sounds as expected. The bores show some moderate pitting just forward of the chambers with significant improvement further down the barrel. The gun is accompanied by a Colt historical letter dated March 19, 2010. There are additional hand written notes which appear to trace the gun’s ownership within the same family from its original purchase from Griffith and Semple to its current owner. While the Colt letter lists a 30 inch barrel, it is actually 28 inches. While, I’m unsure, I suspect the letter misstated the length. Reduced price!
