Colt Model 1878 Hammer Shotgun, 10 Gauge, Grade 4, 30” Fine Twist Steel Barrels, Mfg 1880, Restored
Description: TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME with this 10-gauge Colt Model 1878 hammer shotgun. The Model 1878 was Colt’s most expensive gun when it was manufactured. This gun, which was manufactured in 1880, is properly restored to a condition similar to what it would have been after a few years use by the original owner. This wonderful piece of our history is ready to go back to the field hunting turkeys and waterfowl, or to the sporting clays range. The wood is reconditioned to replace the natural oils, bring out its original beauty, and better preserve it during the next 30 yeaers of use. The preparation of the barrels for refinishing and the action for re-color case hardening was entirely by hand. The color case-hardening is by Classic Guns, Crete, IL. The barrels are refinished using the traditional method of slow rust bluing and etching. The pattern that emerged is very attractive, the bores are in excellent condition, and the lettering on the barrel rib is sharp. The 30” barrels are both choked Improved Modified (.025). The wall thickness (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel at 9” from muzzle is 033/.035/.036 and at the middle of the barrel is .034/.040/.048; the left barrel is .035/.035/.033 and .040/.039/.040, respectively. Bores 9” from the breech are both .783”. Chambers are 2-7/8”. This shotgun weighs 8 pounds 8 ounces. The drop at the comb is 2” and at the heel 3-1/4”. Length of pull is 13-1/4”. Both triggers pull at approximately 7 pounds. The gun locks up tight and on face. All serial numbers, 3948, match. The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired using low pressure 2-7/8” shells produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation. However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one a hundred and thirty-seven years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.
