Baker Single Barrel Trap, Sterling Grade, 12ga, 32" Vent Rib, All Matching
Description: Offered for sale is one (1) Baker Single Barrel Trap Shotgun, "Sterling Grade", 32" Vent Rib 12ga, S/N 51127 all matching (approximately year 1921). LOP 14 3/8" to Jostam Pad, DC 1 1/4", DH 1 1/2". Bore is mirror bright. Using a shotgun bore gauge, the bore measures .711" with .028" of measured constriction at the choke. The rib on S/N 51127 is of the floating rib design with rectangular posts. Tang lever is well right of center. Sterling S/N 51127 has an inverted "V" shaped groove milled in the face of the standing breech, starting with the inverted "V" point at the firing pin hole with the "V" sides running downward toward each side of the receiver. The reason for this was to disperse gas from a ruptured primer (see Conley p16). This Sterling grade S/N 51127 is fitted with the forend latch. This type of latch was not spring loaded, but snaps over a small catch to keep it in place. In Frank Conleys book, "The American Single Barrel Trap Gun" page 15, this type of forend latch is pictured on a Baker Sterling grade, S/N 51227, just 100 number higher that this example. From Conley's book, p17, some Baker Gun & Forging Company guns in the 48000-range had lever forends. Some of the 51000 range have no levers. This may have been a buyer's option; however, exactly why they were made this way remains a mystery. From Conley p27, there are four series of serial numbers for the Baker Single Barrel Trap guns. The first were the octagon receiver models made from 1909 until 1914; these were numbered from 1 through 300. In 1915 a new series began, using floating ribs and forend-mounted ejectors. Their numbers ran from 48500 through 48999; they were produced until the sale of the company in 1919. The 40000 through 41000 numbers were from 1919 until 1922. Baker was sold on December 24, 1919, to the H&D Folsom Arms Company of Norwich, Connecticut. From Conley p14, "It was believed that no single barrel Bakers were made after the company's sale in 1919, but later research has turned up H & D Folsom company advertising and guns made and sold as late as 1923. The serial numbers of these guns are in the 51000-51300 range; these guns did not have the letter " F" added to the serial number. Overall condition is very high, 97-98%.
