Henry Atkin (From Purdey’s) 12 Bore Sidelock Ejector with 30” Whitworth Barrels No. 1 of a Pair – Restored in the UK – Sidelever Opening
Description: UPLAND GUNNER'S DREAM - Handsome Henry Atkin (From Purdey’s) best quality 12 bore sidelock ejector with 30-1/4” Whitworth steel barrels, 7-pin sidelocks, and the highly desirable sidelever opening. Profusely and crisply engraved with fluted fences and residual case coloring on the lockplates. Highly figured French walnut straight hand stock and splinter forearm. Atkin number 775 was made in 1894 and is a great handling double by a highly regarded London gunmaker. Inspected and further restored by noted gunsmith Dewey Vicknair. Presented in its oak and leather case with makers’ labels and accessories. Comes with Certificate from Atkin, Grant & Lang and evaluation and invoice from Vicknair Restorations. Weighs 6lb 9oz making it easy to carry for a day afield. The 30” chopper lump steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and have automatic ejectors. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding, low pressure 2-1/2” shotshells are currently available in the US from Gamebore, ARMUSA, and RST Shotshells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “Henry Atkin (From Purdey’s) 2 Jermyn Street, Haymarket, London” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel”. Bores are shiny and the bluing is excellent. The right barrel is bored 0.735 and has a constriction of 0.002 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.022. The left barrel is also bored 0.735 and has a constriction of 0.002 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. Ideal choking for close-in work on quail, grouse and woodcock. The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut with a beautiful horn buttplate. The finish is in excellent condition and the checkering is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-5/8” including the 1-inch horn buttplate by 1-3/8” by 2”. Slightly cast off for the righthand shot. NOTE: The photographs are part of the description.
