Lock Dated “1849”
Here we present an Antique Springfield Model 1842 Musket, manufactured circa 1849 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This musket was converted to a percussion shotgun at some point. The Model 1842 was a crossroads in U.S. firearms history. This was the last .69 caliber smoothbore produced by the U.S. It was also the first regulation model musket to be made in the percussion system and the first U.S. musket made at both Springfield and Harpers Ferry national arsenals. By no means were these out of service during the American Civil War. Soldiers from the North & South would have carried these into battle.
This one has been shortened for use as a shotgun. The stock has a pewter fore end cap and a brass ramrod tube has been brazed under the barrel. Front sight is a shotgun bead. The back of the lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/1849” and the front of the lock is marked “EAGEL/US”.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is dark. The stock is in good shape. The action on this musket is strong.
