good W. COOK, PERTH 15 bore single barrel flintlock fowler
Description: This is not a perfect gun but it is an awful lot of gun for the money. If you're looking for a solid and serviceable original single flintlock fowler for hunting, clays or plinking you won't find a better value. The lock, marked "W. Cook," is super with an impressively strong original mainspring, semi-rainproof pan, roller frizzen spring, and an expertly refaced frizzen with lots of life left, all of which should result in very fast ignition. This is so hard to find in a serviceable original flint gun anymore, particularly without paying a premium. The 32" octagon-wedding band-round brown Damascus barrel with platinum touch-hole is marked "PERTH" atop the breech end, has a silver ovoid blade front sight, and has a fine cylinder bore without any pitting. The bore measures about 0.693" according to my cheap Chinese gauge, making it a 14 bore. The bottom of the barrel is marked with what appear to be Birmingham proofs and "STUBBS D&M." Weighing only 5lbs and 11ozs, this gun would be a pleasure to carry afield. There was a break through the forend which has been expertly repaired and is completely solid. The barrel key is a replacement as is the right side escutcheon. Finally, an iron pin has been placed through the under rib and barrel at the muzzle. There is some old pitting from rust on the rib near the muzzle and I assume the rib was loose and this pin was part of the repair. The rib is secured tightly to the barrel. The barrel rings like a bell when I hold it by the ramrod thimble and flick it with my finger. I believe this is a turn of the century flint fowler, give or take a handful of years judging by the lack of a patent breech, the form of the front sight, and the semi-rainproof pan. I find a listing for W. Cook in Birmingham but none in Perth, Scotland although I'm familiar with guns and makers from Perth, Scotland. Again, a lot of gun for the money. SOLD Antique: Yes |
