GOUDY/ HEILMANN CUSTOM MODEL 70, CAL. 30-06
Description: OUTSTANDING RIFLE IN THE BEST ALL AROUND RIFLE CARTRIDGE. The 30-06 or 30-06 Springfield or 30 Gov't 06 for those older hunting fans. Overlooked and set aside for decades at times by faster , hotter, smaller calibers and bigger calibers promoted by gun writers and munnition manufactures. This cartrigde served this country well through two world wars and in two world reknown rifles , the 03 Springfield and the MI Garand as well as countless fully automatic weapons systems. If I had a choice of one hunting rifle cartrdge this, the 30-06 would be it. I completed the metalwork on this barreled action back in 2010. I started with the customer supplied pre-64 Winchester model 70 action and performed the following work: Complete detail and strip the action, ultrasonisc clean, dry and fine bead blast all parts. Stone and polish interior of reciever. Exterior file, stone and polish to retain original marking and ser. no. " Clover leaf " rear tang. Removed original Winchester bolt knob and welded in place a new MacFarland 2 panel bolt knob, filed , shaped and polished. This conversion is invisible. Detail, stone and polish of exposed small parts. Fit , detail and polish of Blackburn bottom metal. Reshape and checker Wisner bolt stop. Machine blanks, fit, machine in place custom scope bases for Talley rings. Install barrel: Includes, truing of bolt and reciever face, lap locking lugs, custom contour Krieger 1-10 twist barrel, hand strike and polish, cut and crown at 23", thread, chamber, headspace , cut in extractor and test fire. Cost of metal work including parts at todays cost $6800. STOCKWORK: Gary Goudy performed the stockwork on this rifle. Gary needs no introduction. Using a Fisher classic grip cap and black Decelorator recoil pad, Gary carved his classic stock design I m guessing Gary also used Waterlox for his traditional finish. 13.75 inch length of pull and ebony forend tip. The checkering is 22 lines per inch. I'm told the wood is Turkish walnut. Solid layout, conservative, stable grain flow with nice color. Some would say the perfect piece of wood for a hunting rifle. I will not price someone else's work . Gary is thriving and physically fit in his mid eighties but sadly his eye sight is failing him and so, he is no longer able to see well enough to do stockwork ( but he tells me he is working on a birch bark canoe ? ) COLORING: I am not sure who performed the rust bluing on this rifle but looks to be nicely done. I'm sure it was someone Gary trusted to do a proper job. There is no other metal fishish better than rust bluing for a classic, durable metal coating. This rifle has been carried and shot very little. This rifle is not in my possession. My friend / client and owner supplied the photos and will answer any questions you have (that I can't answer) via phone or e-mail.
