Winchester pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade Featherweight, .30-06 MINT

Description:
Winchester pre-64 Model 70 bolt action rifle.  This is one of the most rare, collectible and desirable of the model 70’s…a Super Grade Featherweight, chambered in .30-06.  Only 4 calibers were cataloged as available on this model: .30-06, .270, .308 and .243 with a few other calibers available on a special order only basis.  Most were made in the mid 1950’s.

This Super Grade Featherweight was made in 1957 and it appears unfired with the original hang tags.  It is hard to very difficult to “fake” one of these because of the unique features that are exclusive to it.  

First, the stock is configured only for a 22” featherweight barrel:  The barrel channel is not built for the rear sight lug and retaining screw as on a standard weight rifle; there are two holes for weight reduction under the checkered aluminum buttplate.

Second, on the barrel & frame:  The recoil lug is usually stamped with the reverse “S” indicating Super Grade; and the bolt is completely “jeweled”/“engine turned”, as is the magazine follower.  The bottom of the barrel is stamped with the caliber and often stamped SUPER and the crown of the barrel is almost flat and polished. Also, the front sight is bead is gold. The trigger guard and the floorplate are aluminum with the floorplate being stamped “SUPER GRADE”.

With Winchester, as with other makers, there can be exceptions to the rule.  However on this mint 70, .30-06 Featherweight Super Grade every criteria is met and met properly.

All things considered this rifle is one of the finest Model 70 Super Grade Featherweights anywhere.
