Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 458 African Super Grade. First year, Excellent!
SALE PENDING
Description:
Another fantastic first year gun for this particular unique style, the ultra scarce Model 70 .458 Winchester "African". Only 1226 ever produced!
S/N 381621 with matching scribed bolt made in 1956.
98% Blue and 97% Varnish with only minor handling marks.
25" barrel with an excellent minty bore, along with flawless mechanical functions.
Factory issued, double reinforcing crossbolts through stock. There is also an additional factory recoil block brazed to barrel and inletted into barrel channel, which relatively few of the 458s actually had.
Besides the factory crossbolt(s) of 3 potential variations, these rifles differed from all other 70s by having somewhat elaborate machined rear sights, and a uniquely positioned barrel mounted front swivel.
While not technically cataloged as such, these "Africans" were for all practical purposes Super Grades, and are adorned with those special features such as deluxe grade stocks with elevated cheek rest, Super Grade stamped floorplates, action component jeweling, rust blued barrels, robust detachable swivels, etc.
This fine and unique rifle represents less than 1/4 of 1% of all Pre 64 70 production and good ones can be very hard to come by! Of the few made, many were taken to Africa and have certainly seen better days. This is the third and final one I have offered recently. Like the others, it is a GREAT rifle, and it may be quite some time before I have another in inventory.
