For sale is a Winchester Model 1903 Takedown rifle, chambered in the unique .22 Winchester Automatic. This early semi-automatic rifle is an intriguing piece with plenty of history and character.
The .22 Winchester Automatic is a rimfire cartridge. It was specifically designed by Winchester for the Model 1903 rifle. This cartridge is distinct from the more common .22 LR and cannot be used interchangeably. The .22 Winchester Automatic was designed to be more reliable in the semi-automatic action of the Model 1903, avoiding the fouling issues associated with black powder.
Featuring a 20” barrel, 13.25” length of pull, and an overall length of 36.5”, this rifle retains its classic proportions along with a 10-shot tubular magazine. The English-style straight stock has some noticeable cracks on the left side near the receiver and extending from the tang, while the forearm also shows signs of cracking. Given these concerns, the rifle was not disassembled to avoid aggravating the cracks further.
The exterior condition is well-worn, with heavy pitting on both the receiver and barrel, which obscures some of the original markings. The bore also shows signs of pitting, so this is a rifle best suited for those who appreciate it more as a collector’s piece rather than for active use.
This Winchester Model 1903 tells a story of its age, and for those looking for an authentic example of this early semi-auto design, this one offers plenty of character. Additional photos and close-ups of the cracks and pitting are available upon request. Don’t miss out on owning a piece of early Winchester history that still has plenty of charm.
