c1918 WINCHESTER M1886 “LIGHTWEIGHT” Lever Action TAKEDOWN .33 WCF Repeater WORLD WAR I Era Hunting/Sporting TAKEDOWN RIFLE
Description: c1918 WINCHESTER M1886 “LIGHTWEIGHT” Lever Action TAKEDOWN .33 WCF Repeater WORLD WAR I Era Hunting/Sporting TAKEDOWN RIFLE Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Lever Action Takedown Rifle, made in 1918 in New Haven, Connecticut. The M1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester. Theodore Roosevelt, later President of the United States, was very fond of the Model 1886 working rifle during his western adventures on the plains. From 1886 through 1935, almost 160,000 carbines and rifles were produced with calibers that ranged from the smaller 33 WCF to the largest, 50-100, with the most popular caliber being the .45-70 and the 45-90. This rifle was a great improvement over the Model 1876. Its shorter, streamlined frame proved very popular and was well received by sportsmen, shooters, and law enforcement groups alike. The Model 1886 continued the trend towards chambering heavier rounds and had an all-new and considerably stronger locking-block action than the toggle-link Model 1876. In April 1919, Winchester eliminated the “18” and “19” from the model names of all of the various models that were in active production. So, after this date, the Model 1886 would have been the Model 86. The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The stock has been modestly refinished and remains solid. The follower in the magazine tube must have been misplaced at some point back in the day, so a small French 5 Centimes coin from 1921 was used as part of a replacement for the lost piece—a clever little fix from the period of use!
