Winchester High Wall Model 1885 Griffin & Howe NYC Custom 32-40 Left-Handed
Description:
“GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK” marked on the left side of the receiver of this Superb, Old-Style; Custom; Left-Handed Winchester High-Wall 1885 in 32-40 Caliber only elevates the class of this striking piece of gunmaker’s art – by Winchester and G&H. Formerly fine furniture and cabinetmakers, the G&H shop – both before and after they occupied an entire floor of the Old Abercrombie & Fitch on 5th Avenue – showed off their Wood and Metal Artistry in rifles like this. The un-numbered receiver is Highly Polished and Blued, as is the Rest of the Metal Furniture. Several of the Screws are Flower-Engraved, and a Previous Owner’s “H*W” Monogram within an Octagon Shield graces the Upper Tang. What appear to be Original Winchester Factory Double-Set Triggers are surrounded by the properly-shaped Trigger-Guard/Under-Lever. The later-appearing Barrel is “as-turned/unpolished/in the white” at 26-Inches Long x 1.020 Inch Diameter with a 1.070 Muzzle that is Target Recess-Crowned. The barrel has pairs of drilled and tapped holes for (probably) 3/8” dovetail scope bases – with the center pair offset to the right. The bore and rifling look to be in good condition by eye under a flashlight. The Left-Handed/ Outline-Cheekpiece Stock and Round-Sided/Flat-Bottom Beaver-Tail Forend appear to be Stained Tiger Maple of Outstanding High-Grade & Select Grain. Fine Bordered Checkering surrounds the Pistol Grip (having a Blued Metal Cap) and the Checkering also Surrounds the Rounded Sides & Flat(ish) Bottom of the Forend. The rear of the buttstock has a single, heavy-duty sling-swivel stud. The Aluminum Buttplate is way out of character – but must have suited a previous owner. We expected this rifle to feel hefty, but it doesn’t; it balances so well that in our estimation, it makes an excellent offhand shooter. Please ask any questions or request additional information before purchase as this item will be costly to return owing to CA re-registration and other regulations. Any refunds will be minus our actual shipping cost and FFL fees after buyer pays return shipping. The listed price Includes Insured Ground Shipping from a CA FFL Dealer to yours. Payment is by Money Order, Bank (Certified) Check or Personal Check (held 2-3 days). We are the Estate Executor and Trustee, not a dealer, and cannot handle credit card or electronic payments. This item is subject to prior sale.
