Winchester High Wall Model 1885 40-70 Sharps-Straight Restored
Description: This is an Extraordinarily Tasteful, High-End, Re-Stocked Restoration of an Original Winchester Model 1885 High-Wall in 40-70 Sharps (Straight) Caliber with a Sporting-Model Stock and 30-Inch, Slightly Tapered (approximately 1.20 at Breech to approximately 1.050 at the Muzzle) Full Octagon Barrel. The Bottom Tang behind the Single Trigger is marked *PAT. OCT. 7th 79.* -- and behind that, Serial number 24XX (between the two bottom screws). The top of the barrel ahead of the receiver ring carries the Cartridge Marking “CAL. 40 – 70 SHARPS STR.” - and ahead of that, in two lines “ – MANUFACTURED BY THE – / -- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. –“ According to ://winchestercollector/dates/ this rifle was manufactured in 1886. Restoration of the receiver, which has lost it’s color but, retained the geographic shadows of its original ‘case’ finish. Same for the lever and other major metal parts and furniture. The barrel appears original, possibly a Winchester #3 contour – but with no mark beneath the forend that we can see: Size across the flats = (approximately) 1.20” at the Breech; and (approximately) 1.050” at the Muzzle. The outer edges of the muzzle are chamfered, as is the crown (bore). The barrel flats go all the way to the receiver face, which is chamfered and has had its overhang-rim milled away – as sometimes was done when fitting heavy-contour barrels. The Bore looks excellent with sharp rifling to the eye – better that the pictures. A 30-40 Krag cartridge case, which can be used to form 40-70 Brass, was in the chamber when we first evaluated the rifle. The Wood is Splendid and appears to be Dark Walnut selected for Grain, Figure, and Highlights – which are complemented by Excellent Fitting and Checkering in a Diamond-Border Pattern that Wraps around the Slender, Schnabel Forend. Both Forend and Pistol Grip have Typical Model 1885 (? Possibly) Dark Rosewood Inlet-Accents as shown in the photos. A Checkered Niedner Buttplate has Diamond Borders around the Screws. The Front Sight is a Plain (and dull) Brass Bead; the Rear is an Elevation-Adjustable, Folding Tang Sight with Large & Small built-in hinged/folding Peep and a locking lever that looks like a Vintage Lyman. Condition is best judged by the photos. Barrel markings are faint, suggesting polishing and rebluing; and as mentioned above, the receiver has lost its original case colors, and has accumulated a few blemishes and scratches over nearly 140 years. None of that takes away from this rifle’s strikingly good looks – not to mention high-end quality. Please ask any questions or request additional information before purchase as this item will be troublesome and costly to return owing to CA re-registration and other regulations. Any refunds will be minus our actual shipping cost and FFL fees (greater than $150) after buyer pays return shipping. The listed price Includes Insured Ground Shipping from a CA FFL Dealer to yours.
