WWI U.S. Winchester Model of 1917 Bolt-Action .30-06 with Bayonet
Description: Here we present a very nice example of the Winchester Model of 1917 bolt-action .30-06 rifle made in New Haven, CT in 1918. The Winchester M1917, also known as the "American Enfield", was an adaptation of Britain’s Enfield Pattern 1914, which the United States was producing for the British before direct intervention in the Great War. When the U.S. finally entered into WWI, they too needed all the small arms production they could muster for the war effort. Rather than retooling these factories to produce the American Model 1903, the U.S. Ordnance Department simply elected to adapt the Enfield Pattern 1914 to American specifications, primarily chambering the rifle for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge, creating the U.S. Model 1917. These rifles went to arm the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during the war. Three companies, Eddystone Arsenal, Remington Arms and the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. manufactured the M1917, with Winchester producing the fewest (465,980) of the 2,193,429 created. This rifle (S/N 211996) is in overall Very Good Condition. There are a few spots with some light finish wear but the metal is in overall great shape. The markings are all clear and legible, including the 3 flaming bomb U.S. ordnance marks on the barrel, receiver and bolt handle. The action is smooth and everything functions as it should. The stock is in very good condition with a few light scratches/abrasions. The bore of the 26" barrel is in great shape as well with strong rifling and no visible pitting. The top of the barrel is marked "W/(Flaming Bomb)/3-18" right behind the front sight. The underside of the barrel is stamped by C.A.I., a well-known firearms importer, which indicates the rifle did make it overseas, and quite possibly saw action. The rifle also comes with an Excellent Condition 17" blade bayonet made by Remington and marked "1913". The bayonet slides on and off the rifle easily and locks into place very nicely. This is a fine example of one of the most iconic rifles in US Military history. I will gladly answer any questions and send more detailed photos to anyone who is interested.
