Pre War Winchester Model 70 in 30 M1 caliber. Extremely RARE Frankford Arsenal test rifle!
Description: Quite possibly the rarest caliber and certainly one of the most uniquely marked model 70s ever produced. This is a 30 M1 caliber that has "Frankford Arsenal" stampings on both the metal and the wood. Frankford Arsenal was in operation from 1816 to 1977. They were the sole producer of military ammunition in the United States in 1940, but also became very involved in other research and development, especially after the onset of WWII. I have included a copy of an original Winchester ledger page with an entry on 9/22/1942 confirming a special order of four unique chrome moly 30 M1 caliber test barrels. It seems highly plausible to myself and others that due to their higher base price and steel type noted, these were very likely standard weight Model 70 barrels, since I have another supporting Winchester internal memo dated September 18, 1942 stating that they would not be able to provide regular GI issue M-1 carbine test barrels during that time. That is why the order designates regular M1 carbine barrels OR #6 velocity barrels (straight taper M70) OR these "special" barrels at a significantly higher cost in those days, and the barrels which were ultimately received by FA 4 days after the memo. Coincidentally, I have personally encountered exactly four of these Model 70s in 30 M-1 caliber during my entire tenure while selling and specializing in this model. With all of that said, here are the specifics of this particular example: Extremely Rare Pre War Winchester Model 70 standard rifle in 30 M-1 caliber with Frankford Arsenal stampings and HBJ inspector markings on both metal and wood. S/N 41866 with matching scribed bolt made in 1942. 24" standard weight barrel with excellent bore. 96% original Blue and 90% original Varnish. Correct sights and swivels. Excellent mechanical functions. Possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity for the advanced model 70 collector! Expedited and fully insured shipping from Alaska is an additional $100 SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
