Pre-War Winchester Model 70, .220 SWIFT, Made in 1937, No Extra Holes
Description:
Pre War .220 SWIFT Winchester Model 70 that no one has fooled with. Is has been used and hunted, and has several small marks and scratches, mostly on the stock, but has had no extra holes drilled and has the original sights and the steel buttplate. This one was made in the second year of production, 1937. I got this one from a friend of mine in Arizona about 15 years ago, along with a nice 22 Hornet that will be listed later on. He bought it from the widow of the original owner as part of his estate. The story is that it was purchased as a rifle with which to hunt deer. It appears to have been carried on many hunts. There is evidence of a receiver sight that it may have had at one time. It has the original semi buckhorn rear sight and the Winchester front bead sight. It has the original sling swivels. The rear bridge has not been drilled. The pre-war safety is in tact and works properly. The bolt is numbered to the receiver. The stock has not been refinished, the checkering is in great condition, and the metal has the original rust blue that was only on the pre-war rifles and on the Supergrade series. There are 2 small gouges in the stock between the rear sling swivel and the toe. I'm not sure how they got there. The rifle shoots great and is in a classic pre-1964 caliber, 220 SWIFT. Only 3% of pre-64 model 70s were in 220 Swift. Unaltered specimens are very hard to find, most have been drilled and refinished. This one is a good, honest gun.
